::About Us::
Eastern
Genetic Resources is a family enterprise owned and
managed by Brenden and Madelene McClelland. This
business is integrated with a grain and beef cattle
operation on the 800hectare family property “Belmont”.
Situated near the foothills of the Bunya Mountains
on the Darling Downs region of South East
Queensland.
Eastern
Genetic Resources objective is to supply breeding
stock that are sound, structurally correct with
the attributes of high growth rate, excellent carcass
and fertility. Performance recording has been undertaken since
1980. During this period our breeding stock were
independently evaluated through the Central Boar
Test Station at Rocklea and later at Wacol. We were successful in having over 70%
of our boars pass.
In 1988 Eastern Genetic Resources
was a co-operating herd in the early development
work of Pig Blup by the Animal Genetics and Breeding
Unit (AGBU) at the University of New England, Armidale,
New South Wales.
This early involvement later led Brenden
to be a liason committee member for a number of
years with the development of PigBlup at A.G.B.U.
At the same time we were also involved in the
early stages of an across herd analysis conducted
by the genetics team at the Queensland Department
of Primary Industries. This project later evolved into the now
successful National Pig Improvement Program.
An alliance of breeders with aSuch traits as Average Daily Gain, Backfat,
Numbers Born Alive, 21 day Litter Weight and Weaning
to Conception Interval are analysed on farm by PigBlup. Current trait work is being undertaken
to evaluate the 1GF-1 trait. This trait has a high
correlation to feed conversion efficiency.
A dedicated team, are employed to manage the
A.I. centre whereby a range of high index boars
are available. Collections are undertaken 3 times/week,
Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
This ensures a readily available supply of
Terminal or Maternal Sire Lines to our clients.
